macOS — Unicode Hex Input 017E 017D
Windows — Word017E Alt + X017D Alt + X

macOS hex input needs the “Unicode Hex Input” source enabled (System Settings → Keyboard). The Windows Alt + X trick works in Word and Outlook; elsewhere use the panel below.

On a Mac

  • Press and hold the z key — an accent menu pops up; pick ž.
  • Character Viewer: ⌃⌘Space, search “z with caron (háček)”, double-click it.

On Windows

  • Emoji & symbols: Win + ., switch to symbols, find ž.
  • Character Map (search it in the Start menu) → find ž → Copy.

With PolyType installed

If you run the PolyType app or browser extension, type the base letter then the diacritic — no layout switch (the directive accents the letter immediately before it):

z;caron␣

The instant cycle ;;z also works (repeat to cycle variants). This inline syntax needs PolyType running; without it, use a method above.
